There is a minimum payout of $10, and you can have your earnings sent to your PayPal account or for free target gift cards.

#2 Swagbucks

Swagbucks is one of my favorite sites to make extra money online.

Just for signing-up as a new user, you’ll get a $10 registration bonus.

Get paid for the following tasks:

• Taking surveys
• Shopping online
• Clipping coupons
• Playing games

Swagbucks is simply a great choice because it’s one of the best small task sites out there to make extra money online.

Not only that, but most of these tasks you’re probably doing already.

You can apply to become a DoorDash Driver to help make these deliveries.

As a driver, you get paid a base fee along with any tips that your customers pay.

An easy way to increase tips is to make sure to dress professional, be courteous and make your deliveries fast.

You’ll be spending about 50% of your time online accepting orders and the other half of your time making deliveries.

This is a great way to make money, and you’ll probably be earning much more than just one dollar per day.

Expect to make anywhere between $10 – $25 per hour, and you can even make as much as $100 or more per day.

For many this turns into a long-term side gig.

You can also save money on DoorDash as a customer by getting your first delivery free.

3. Investing With Acorns – Your First $5 Free With A $1 Investment

When you start an Acorns account and invest just $1, you get $5 for free as a sign-up bonus.

When you create your account, you’ll need to connect your debit or credit cards.

Each time you make a transaction, Acorns will round the amount up to the next dollar.

For example, let’s say you buy a magazine for $3.50. Acorns will round up this amount to $4 and put the remaining $.50 cents as an investment into your Acorns account.

All you have to do is a few extra steps to attain anywhere between 1% – 20% cash back on almost every purchase.

Let’s walk through a few of our favorite services that allow you to do this.

#1 Ibotta

Ibotta is a cash back app that gives you a $20 bonus when you scan your first receipt.

Before you go shopping, browse through the offers on the App. Choose the ones for items on your shopping list and they’ll be linked to your account.

When you buy the linked items, upload a photo of your receipt to Ibotta and the cash back will be sent to your account within 48 hours.

The minimum cash out is $20. You can transfer the money from your Ibotta account into your PayPal account. It’s not difficult at all to reach that $20 minimum with Ibotta.

The offers aren’t for things like ten cents off three rolls of paper towels. Some recent ones include $3 back on chips and soda, $0.75 back on milk, and $4 back on dog treats.

You can meet that $20 with just one week’s worth of grocery shopping!

When you click on one of their links, they install a cookie in your browser that tracks your purchases automatically and then redirects you to a shopping site of your choice.

After you make a purchase on a retailer’s webpage, Rakuten earns a commission. Instead of keeping all of that money for themselves, they give the majority (if not all of it) back to you in the form of cash back.

It’s a win-win situation.

The best part?

You automatically earn a free $10 sign-up bonus in the form of a free Walmart gift card or other cash prizes.

For those really interested in making money with Rakuten, get paid $25 for every friend you refer that makes their first purchase through the site.

BeFrugal is a cash back website that works exactly like Rakuten.

This is because sometimes you’ll find different cash back rates between the two sites.

We suggest checking with both sites really quickly when you’re looking to purchase. Whichever service has a higher cash back rate, use that cash back portal for your online shopping.

The one thing I really like about BeFrugal is their live chat service in case you have any issues. You can connect to someone almost immediately during work hours.

5. Gift Card Sites

Check around the house, do you have some old gift cards laying around that you never used? Check your email too; you might have some old eGift cards floating around. If you do, you can earn extra cash by selling them online.

Cardpool is a gift card exchange site. You can sell unwanted gift cards, both physical and digital and store credits for up to 92% of their value.

You can sell gift cards with only partial balances so long as the balance is between $25 and $1,000. If you have a $100 gift card and you spent $25 of it, you can sell the remainder.

Cardpool will pay you by paper check, but if you need cash fast, Cardpool has partnered with places like check-cashing, grocery, and department stores who will give you cash for your gift cards or another gift card right on the spot.

Raise is a similar site, but sellers are allowed to set the sale price for their cards. You can’t sell a physical gift card worth less than $10 or more than $2,000. An eGift card can have a balance between $5-2,000.

You have three options for you payouts from Raise. You can choose to have your money direct deposited; Raise will mail you a paper check (this is the option that takes the longest, up to 14 days), or via PayPal (which can take up to three business days).

Both these sites are great if you’re shopping for gift cards too because they both offer cards at a discount. Something to keep in mind for the upcoming holidays!

6. Sell Your Old Devices

While you’re looking around for old gift cards, keep an eye out for old tech devices. Gazelle buys things like old smartphones and iPods.

They give you an offer online and the instructions on how to mail your device in. Keep in mind that the entire process can take several days or even a few weeks.

But there is a shortcut if you need to get money fast.

Gazelle has dozens of kiosks in places like Walmart. You can take your device to a kiosk, get an offer, and if you accept it, you’ll get money on the spot.

I love Gazelle. Not only do they pay you for stuff you aren’t using, but they’re also easy to use, entirely legitimate, and they recycle or properly dispose of items that are dangerous to the environment when dumped into a landfill.

Make money and be green at the same time!

Don’t want to use Gazelle? Amazon also has a great trade-in program for old electronics.

7. Sell Your Stuff

We all have too much stuff in our houses, stuff we never use that is just taking up space.

Use an online platform to sell some of that stuff.

Selling things on eBay or Amazon takes some effort as it takes time to set up an account, but you can quickly and easily sell items locally using a local Facebook group or posting on Nextdoor and CraigsList.

Some of the best items to sell on local sites include big, heavy items like furniture, appliances, and tools since there is no shipping involved.

Other items that sell well include children’s clothes and toys, shoes, purses, and musical instruments.

All you have to do is upload a photo, description, and price of the item and let the offers come to you.

Do keep in mind you might end up “selling” the item more than once.

Buyers from these sites sometimes agree to buy something and then just flake. Don’t be discouraged if that happens, just re-list the item and try again.

This is definitely one of the best ways to make extra money while also a great way to get paid to get rid of unwanted clutter in your home.

8. Sell Your Photos

Everyone is a photographer these days thanks to the fancy cameras in our smartphones. It can be a tough living being a professional photographer; there is a lot of competition.

But remember, we’re just trying to make $1 per day online. So you’re not going to pitch your work to magazines or betrothed couples, they’re going to hire pros.

But all of you amateur shutterbugs can try your hand at making a little money by selling your photographs on Shutterstock.

The site pays 25 cents every time one of your images is downloaded, with a tiered set of raises to 33 cents, 36 cents and 38 cents per download as you reach the $500, $3,000 and $ 10,000-lifetime earnings milestones.

The site pays via PayPal. Some of my clients use images from Shutterstock on their sites.

While some clients on the site might be looking for moody, arty shots, most of them are looking for stock photos so take and upload lots of mundane stuff like cups of coffee, a hand holding a smartphone, and a laptop with a pair of glasses on the keyboard!

9. Sell Your Lessons

Are you a teacher? If so, this one is for you. Teachers Pay Teachers is an online community where teachers can buy and sell lesson plans. Teachers can set their own prices for their materials and the site pays once a month via PayPal.

Some teachers have been so successful in selling their materials on the site that they’ve quit teaching because it was paying less!

It’s no wonder. It’s been reported that two-thirds of American teachers use the site to buy classroom lessons and materials. If you’re a teacher, this is without question something you should try.

10. Open an Online Bank Account

Currently, PNC Bank is giving away money! When you open a “virtual wallet” which is an online bank account, they will give you $50, $200, or $300, depending on how much you direct deposit into your new account.

When you open an account and set up a direct deposit of at least $500 and pay one bill from the account, you’ll get $50. To get $200, direct deposit at least $2,000 and pay one bill from the account.

If you want that free $300, direct deposit at least $5,000 and pay one bill through the account.

There are also many different bank refer a friend programs to help you earn money.

11. Freelance Sites

When people think of freelancing, they think of jobs like writing or graphic design but not everyone has those skills.

There are dozens of other kinds of jobs available on freelancing sites like Upwork, Fiverr and Guru.

You can do everything from research to social media or marketing to subtitling.

It’s free to create an account on all of these sites.

Bid low on a few jobs to get experience.

This will help your profile get more views.

12. Rent Your Home

You can start making money by renting your home on Airbnb.

The average host is making almost $1,000 a month! Even if you just rented your home out for one weekend, you’d indeed have more than your $1 a day online.

And don’t think that you have to live in a super popular tourist city to earn some extra money either.

Is there a college near you? Rent your place on game weekends, parent’s weekends, and during graduation.

Do you have a big concert venue nearby? Rent your home out when there’s a big act in town.

Even if you live next to the middle of nowhere, somebody’s in-laws live near you, and they don’t want to bunk up with them over the holidays!

I have a friend who made $36,000 a year renting out her home in New Orleans last year, and it’s nowhere near the French Quarter or the race track where Jazz Fest is held but it’s near Tulane and Loyola Universities, so I know you can make money outside of your typical touristy areas.

Where will you stay while your home is rented? A cheap hotel or a friend’s couch. It’s worth it to give up your home for a few nights.

This is one of the better ways of making money that also generates a semi-passive income and can even turn into a long-term gig.

In our many cross-country moves (13 homes in 5 states in 15 years) my wife and I have typically sold our things to avoid the cost of a moving truck.

That’s one reason to get rid of stuff.

Maybe you’re planning a traveling lifestyle and need to go light, or you need to free up some space in the house.

Perhaps you plan to rid yourself of worldly possessions so you can join a monastery.

Or you just need to raise some cash.

Whatever the reason, if you’re planning to get rid of some or all of your things, you might as well get top dollar for them.

The problem is, selling a camping tent isn’t the same as selling your old cell phone.

And where do you go to sell old comics, or silver coins, or tools?

Aluminum Cans

In states with “bottle bills,” you can return aluminum beer and soda cans for the deposit, usually 5 cents each (we got 10 cents each when we lived in Michigan).

In other states you can sell them as scrap metal, but the current value of aluminum makes them worth only one or two cents apiece.

Check out these other things you can scrap for cash.

Appliances

Craigslist is the place to sell appliances.

If that old stove or fridge is broken, you can put it in the free section.

Someone will take it away for the scrap metal, saving you a disposal fee.

Or bring it to a scrap metal buyer yourself to get a few bucks.

RECraigslist.com says the scrap value is $8 to $28 for most kitchen appliances.

For appliances in good condition, try your hand at selling online, in places like:

• Facebook Marketplace
• LetGo
• OfferUp

If you can ship it, like for small appliances, look at eBay, Amazon, or Mercari.

Aquariums

You can sell aquariums and related equipment on AquaBid.com.

Or, to avoid shipping hassles, just sell the stuff through Craigslist,

Backpacking Equipment

I’ve sold gold-prospecting equipment on Craigslist, and I’m sure you can sell backpacking gear that way.

But to get top dollar you’ll do better going where the best buyers are.

For example, Backpacking.net has a forum for selling gear.

Batteries

Small batteries don’t typically have any residual value, but if you have a car or boat batteries around, you might be able to sell them.

Google “battery buyers” to find a recycler near you.

There are online buyers as well, like Rockaway Recycling.

Bicycles

The easiest way to sell a bicycle is to put it out front with a sign on it.

I got $35 that way for an old bike that I bought for $30.

With a little more work (a photo and description), you can get a higher price on Craigslist.

If it’s a truly valuable bicycle, see if a local bike shop will either buy it from you or sell it on consignment.

Books

Bookscouter has a great search tool to find the best place to sell your books online.

Just enter the ISBN number and see your options.

Textbooks get the most money, but you can sell other books as well.

For faster cash (and no shipping hassles) try a local used book store.

Most pay only in the form of store credit, but I once got $15 cash from a local store for a small stack of books.

Boxes

BoxSmart.net and BoxCycle.com buy cardboard boxes.

They usually buy only large quantities, so this is an option for after a move (once you’ve unpacked all those boxes).

Calendars

If they’re vintage (old and interesting), you can sell calendars to antique dealers and other local vintage item retailers, like Old Seattle Paperworks, for example.

You can also sell collectible calendars on eBay.

Cameras

BuybackWorld buys used cameras.

Craigslist is another option, and for the fastest cash try a local pawn shop.

Cell Phones

Swappa.com has no fees to list and sell your cell phone (buyers pay the fees).

Gazelle buys phones directly from you.

Local iPhone repair stores sometimes pay cash for phones — even broken ones, since they can fix them for resale.

Clothes

Google “clothing consignment store” and the name of your locality to find a place that will sell your clothes for you.

For instant cash try Plato’s Closet or Buffalo Exchange.

Either will pay cash for popular name-brand clothes. A rummage sale is the best place to sell the rest.

Coin Collections

A local coin shop will buy your coin collection for cash, but first use an online coin price guide to see what each coin is worth.

CoinTrackers.com says you can expect to get at least 60 percent of retail value.

Selling on eBay is more work, but should get you the best price.

Comic Books

GetCashForComics.com buys single issues or whole collections.

SellComicBooks.us also buys comics directly from you.

NewKadia.com does appraisals and connects you with buyers.

Computers

If your computer is still functional, try selling it through Craigslist.

Otherwise, you can learn how to how to scrap a computer to sell the metals and components.

Diabetes Test Strips

If you have leftover diabetes test strips, don’t throw them away.

You can get cash for the test strips and lancets from RescueTestStrips.com.

DVD Movies

Pawn shops are the place to sell your DVDs fast for cash, but don’t expect them to buy anything other than popular movies.

Put the rest in your next rummage sale.

Electronics

The Amazon Trade-In program is a great place to sell used electronics, although you’ll be paid in Amazon credit, not cash (which isn’t a problem if you shop online regularly).

Best Buy also has a trade-in-for-credit program.

Pawn shops, Craigslist, and rummage sales are some of your other options.

Exercise Equipment

Johnson Fitness and similar stores that sell used exercise equipment also buy it.

Craigslist is your best bet otherwise, and your next rummage sale is always an option.

Fishing Gear

What do you do with all that old fishing tackle in the garage? Try SellFishingTackle.us.

But they generally buy collections, not individual pieces. A pawn shop or your next rummage sale is your best bets for the rest.

Furniture

Craigslist is one of my favorite places to sell furniture.

I also like furniture consignment stores, because you can get that stuff out of the house right now, even if it will take a while to sell.

Of course, you’ll give up 50% or so as a consignment fee, but often we’ve done better that way anyhow, because the furniture store gets a higher price.

Gift Cards

If you have store, restaurant, and other retailer gift cards you won’t be able to use, they can be sold for 50% to 90% of the remaining value.

Think about all those gift cards you collect over the years for birthdays, holidays, or your anniversary that you just don’t use.

There are only so many regifting opportunities out there.

This is an excellent solution for ditching those unused gift cards for cash.

We suggest Raise or Cardpool.

Handguns

If you don’t have a local pawn shop or gun shop where you can sell your handguns, there are places to sell online.

For example, CashMyGuns.com will give you a quote, send you the packaging materials, and then send you a check once they get your guns.

They say it’s “safe, legal, and hassle-free.”

Ink Cartridges

Old ink cartridges get you $4 each at Staples when you buy new ink.

Sites like SellToner.com buy used ink cartridges and toner, but only in larger quantities.

Jewelry

The fastest way to get cash for jewelry is to sell it to a local jewelry shop.

If it’s made of silver or gold, try a coin shop or precious metals buyer.

Use an online metals value calculator to determine what you should be paid, which is usually at least 75% of spot value for silver and closer to 90% for gold.

Junk

Try selling possibly-useful junk at a rummage sale.

If the items are metal, sell to a scrap dealer.

You can check the current scrap values of various metals online.

I recently made $15 selling broken lawn furniture and other metal items to a metals buyer.

Kayaks

Play It Again Sports buys used kayaks and canoes, and they’ll give you cash on the spot.

But with a bit more work, you’ll probably get more selling it yourself on Craigslist.

Kids Clothes

Your kids outgrow their clothes.

If you’re not donating, sell them at in-person or online consignment stores, like ThredUp or Swap.

Knives

If you have hunting knives or antique knives and they are valuable, there are places that sell them for you on consignment, so you can ship them off and wait for a check.

CuttingEdge.com takes knives worth more than $100, and Arizona Custom Knives wants only knives worth at least $200.

You keep 75% of the sales price.

Lamps

Lamps and lighting are great for resell.

People are crazy about them.

Sell on Craigslist or Ebay.

Lawn Furniture

Craigslist, furniture consignment stores, and a rummage sale are the best options (in that order) for selling used lawn furniture.

If it’s junk, but made of metal, sell it to a scrap metal dealer.

Luggage

Craigslist is again a good way to go, although my wife and I have also sold used luggage to a second-hand store, and rummage sales are always an option.

Magazines

There are online tutorials on how to sell magazines.

It’s typically only old ones that have value,  and they can sometimes be sold locally to places like Old Seattle Paperworks.

Sometimes it’s just the vintage ads that have value, so you can make more by cutting them out and selling them on eBay.

Music CDs

If (a big if) you have popular titles, you might get as much as a dollar each for your CDs, at a pawn shop.

My wife and I once got 50 cents each for just 4 of 20 CDs we wanted to sell.

The rest went in our rummage sale.

Newspapers

Newspapers generally have value only if they’re old.

You can sell them by birth-date on eBay (people buy them as gifts for friends’ birthday celebrations).

Or you can clip out old ads to sell; check out the vintage ads for sale on eBay to see what you might get.

Old Stuff

Anything that’s old could have some cash value at an antique store.

You can sometimes determine this with a quick check on eBay, but look for items with actual bids or sales to get an idea of the real value (sellers can ask anything, after all, but it doesn’t mean they get it).

Plastic Bottles

Recycling centers in many cities buy plastic bottles (and soda bottles are returnable for the deposit in states with “bottle bills”).

At the moment you’ll get only about a half-cent each, so you’ll need a lot of them to make it worth your time.

Photography Equipment

This includes cameras, lenses, light boxes, tripods, etc.

Today, in our internet age, you can even rent them out, making recurring passive income online for lending your photo gear.

Photo equipment is pricey so there’s definitely a market of people looking to rent gear for a fraction of the price of buying.

Look at places like:

• Lensrentals
• Borrowlenses
• Kitsplit

Postcards (Old)

You might be able to sell old postcards at an antique store, and we’ve seen them for sale at used book stores too.

Online, you can sell them at CardCow.com.

Quilts

The Antique Man says he buys vintage quilts.

Otherwise you can read over what others have said about how to sell a quilt on eBay.

Radios

NewerAntiques.com has radios on their list of items they buy (it generally has to be old).

Of course, a pawn shop is a possibility, and when all else fails, put it in your rummage sale.

Small Appliances

Start with your kitchen to uncover appliances you hardly ever use or have never used.

Here are some examples:

• Blenders
• Espresso makers
• Breadmakers
• Icecream makers
• Toasters
• Electric hand mixer
• And, more!

If you have one of their stores near you, that’s probably the fastest way to get cash for sports equipment.

But you may get a better price selling on Craigslist.

Toilet Paper Rolls

Yes, you can sell you used toilet paper rolls — the cardboard part leftover.

Toilet paper rolls on eBay sell for about $20 for 100 rolls if you include shipping.

People use them for craft projects.

Tools

Local buyers, like Jim Bode Tools who offers some options for selling tool collections.

Just Google “sell used tools” with the name of your locality.

Pawn shops are your second-best bet, and then there is Craigslist and that rummage sale.

Toys

Once Upon a Child stores buy used toys.

If there isn’t one near you, try selling the toys on Craigslist or at rummage sales.

This is good for childhood toys you held onto, old toys your kids don’t play with or collectibles like Cabbage Patch, Beanie Babies, or vintage Barbie dolls, and others.

ToyMart.com buys vintage and collectible toys.

Trees

Believe it or not, you can sell the trees around your home, if you have enough.

A friend had a few acres around his house “select cut” and made several thousand dollars.

If you can’t find a local lumber company that will come to you, check out SellYourTrees.com.

Urine

The letter “u” was a tough one for this list, but there was that case of the guy who sold his urine for $20 per ounce on Craigslist.

Buyers need the urine to pass drug tests, so to do this you have to be drug-free and willing to participate in their deception.

Video Games

A local pawn shop is the fastest way to cash in, but you may get more selling your video games online, using a website like  Glyde.com.

You can also sell directly online to places like VIP Gamestore or Princeton Record Exchange.

Watches

If you have a valuable watch to sell, try buyers like WatchBox or Moyer Fine Jewelers.

To get maximum value you should also get price quotes from several local buyers, like jewelry and pawn shops.

Wedding Dresses

PreOwnedWeddingDresses.com lets you list your dress for sale for $25, and charges only $5 to list bridesmaid dresses.

Your other option is a local clothing consignment store.

Wine Corks

Sell them on eBay for up to 25 cents each.

The price depends on the type, shipping costs, and the size of the batch.

Buyers use them for craft projects.

X-Rays

If you have x-rays from medical or dental procedures you’ve had done, don’t throw them out.

They have valuable silver in them!

BW Recycling buys x-ray films in all 50 states, as does Cash For Silver USA.

You may need more than one x-ray for them to be interested.

Yard Tools and Equipment

Larger items, like riding lawn mowers, are best sold via Craigslist.

Smaller tools (clippers, rakes, edgers) can be sold at a local pawn shop, or in your next rummage sale.

Zebras (Stuffed Animals)

Yes, I needed at least one thing starting with “z” that might be found around the home, and can be sold for cash.

Where do you sell used stuffed animals?

Well, my wife and I used to sell them at flea markets (they were one of our best sellers), but vintage stuffed animals are probably best sold on eBay.

Selling Everything Else

If you don’t see it on the list above, or even if you do, you might want to try one of the following ways to sell your stuff.

Have a Rummage Sale – This is usually the last stop before just throwing things out or donating them to a thrift store.

Tip: To generate more traffic, advertise a few large or valuable items on Craigslist and note that they can be seen at the rummage sale.

Sell to Pawn Shops and Second-Hand Stores – When my wife and I moved from Colorado to Florida, we sold large batches of stuff to the owner of a second-hand store.

He even came to the house to get it all. Pawn shops are more selective, but they’ll buy many odds and ends.

Try Craigslist – This is one of my favorite places to sell anything worth at least $20 (it’s not worth fielding the phone calls for lower-priced items).

Sell at a Flea Market – Many flea markets have inexpensive daily rates, and you’ll have more potential buyers looking at your stuff than you’ll ever get at a rummage sale.

Sell to an Estate Buyer – These companies commonly buy a whole house full of stuff at a time.

Google “estate buyers” and your city to find one.

To get them to come and give you a quote you may have to first move and then offer them everything left in the home.

Sell online – Or, if all else fails, sell online. There are tons of places to sell used condition goods, other than Craigslist and Ebay, like:

Another great resource for selling is online neighborhood groups and sites, or networking sites like Meet Up, Nextdoor or groups on Facebook or LinkedIn.

1. Download Survey Apps

Survey apps and survey sites take the saying ‘penny for your thoughts’ literally. They’ll actually pay you to tell them your thoughts.

There are a bunch of them out there that you just need to download before you can start earning free money straight away.

Here are some of my favorites:

• Survey Junkie (among the highest paying survey sites)
• Swagbucks ($5 registration bonus with other tasks to earn)
• Pinecone Research (earn a flat $3 per survey)
• Vindale Research ($1 registration bonus)
• Inbox Dollars (this one pays you for reading emails)

Once you fill in some basic information about yourself, you can browse their list of surveys. If you’re eligible, fill them in for an easy, quick cash reward.

It’s not totally ‘free’ money as it does require a little bit of time investment, but the surveys aren’t very hard to complete and usually take around 10-15 minutes.

This is the perfect amount of time to fit them into your regular commute or while waiting in line.

Answering surveys is definitely my favorite way to earn free cash fast.

If you don’t want to go through the hassle of researching the which survey sites are the best, stick with Survey Junkie or Swagbucks. They’re the highest paying and they make it really easy to start earning.

2. Switch Bank Accounts (Or Open a New One)

Did you know that lots of different major banks will actually pay you to switch your current checking savings account over to them?

You can earn hundreds of dollars for what amounts to less than an hour’s work. All you have to do is sign up and start the switching process.

Why do banks offer this switching bonus? Because they’re absolutely crazy about acquiring new customers.

The banking market is competitive, and banks make a lot of money by investing the cash you deposit every month.

If they can attract a new, potentially lifelong client for a few hundred dollars, they will.

You can take advantage of this by accepting those bribes and ‘playing the field’ so to speak.

Just remember to consider other factors aside from the bonus too. It’s pointless switching for a $200 bonus if you end up paying out $300 in hidden fees on a savings account.

If you’re in the UK, switching is especially easy on account of the seven-day Current Account Switch Service (CASS). This has been been in place since September 2013 and puts the onus on banks to make it easier for customers to switch over painlessly.

Sign-up bonuses are similar to switching bonuses but they only require you to open a new account.

Keep in mind you don’t usually have to close your old one unless it’s in your new bank’s terms and conditions.

Here are some banks that will pay you to switch your current/checking account or open a new account with them:

• Chase Bank
• U.S. Bank
• HSBC Bank
• Barclays
• NatWest
• First Direct

Most of the above will pay you somewhere between $100 – $300 for signing up/switching. Not bad for a one-off cash injection.

The last piece of advice I’d give you is to always check the small print, as most of the bonus offers will require you to meet certain eligibility criteria, such as by making a certain minimum deposit within a given timeframe.

3. Buy Gift Cards

Don’t you just hate it when you a gift card off a relative as a birthday gift for a store that you never visit?

Well, so do a lot of people. And what do they do with those gift cards? They sell them, of course! And usually at a significantly marked-down price.

All those re-sold gift cards mean that it’s possible for you to buy second-hand gift cards for your favorite stores at less-than-cost prices, and then use those gift cards against purchases you’d usually make with cash.

For example, let’s say you planned on spending $50 in Walmart for groceries. You could buy a $50 Walmart gift card for around $45 first, redeem it against your grocery purchase, and walk away with $5 spare.

It might not be much, but that’s $5 worth of free money that you wouldn’t have had without this neat little money hack.

4. Invest Your Pennies

One of the easiest ways to get free money is to start investing the money you already have, sit back, and wait for the returns to come in.

I know what you’re thinking though – investing isn’t really a ‘money hack’. Hacks are supposed to be ways to take the work out of earning money and cheat the system, but investing is hard work. It requires time, knowledge, and lots of funds to be successful.

Or does it?

Well, there’s actually a neat little app you can use that takes all the hard work out of investing – an app called Acorns.

With Acorns, all you have to do is download the app, link up your credit card or debit card, and choose your investment strategy (conservative or aggressive). The app will take care of the rest.

It rounds up your purchases to the nearest dollar and adds the difference to an investment pot.

Because it works on spare change, you don’t need to a huge amount of savings to get started.

Also, it won’t feel like you’re taking a huge risk and you probably won’t even notice that spare change leaving your account.

Eventually, those acorns will start growing into money trees, and you can cash out your investment returns for essentially free money.

5. Download Cashback Apps

One of my favorite free money hacks online is to claim cashback as many purchases as you can using cashback rewards apps.

Cashback shopping apps are apps which reward you with money and/or gift cards whenever you make purchases from select retailers.

Typically, all you have to do is browse the offers listed on the app, select one that you’re interested in, make a purchase, and scan/upload your receipt. Once your purchase has been validated, your account will be credited with a cashback reward.

Here are some of the most popular cashback apps available:

• Ibotta
• Trunow
• Drop
• Makeena
• TopCashback
• Rakuten

The cashback amounts you can earn vary between apps and retailers and could be anywhere from 1% to 20%.

Even the smaller amounts will add up over time. Eventually end up with a pretty large pot of money to withdraw.

Personally, I earned around $150 last year from cashback apps alone. It might not sound like much, but it’s completely free money with almost no effort required.

6. Resell Free Items

Sometimes, when people are moving homes or undergoing home improvements, they end up with furniture and appliances that they no longer need.

Getting rid of big items like this can be a hassle, so a lot of people will turn to sites like Craigslist to give them away for free, rather than take them to a skip.

But as that old saying goes, ‘one man’s trash is another man’s treasure’.

In other words, that ‘junk’ that they’re giving away for free might not be junk at all. They might just not know what it’s worth.

The savvy entrepreneur out there can use this to their advantage by scouring sites like Craigslist for free items and then selling them on for a profit.  The great thing about this is that there is no investment required – just a little bit of resourcefulness and a good eye for value!

7. Take Advantage of Sign Up Bonuses

Lots of different websites, apps, and credit cards will pay you free money just to sign up. Most of the time, they do this because they expect to see returns on the money they pay out by locking you into recurring card payments or hooking you in so that you spend more money.

However, if you’re smart about it, you can essentially hack the system to claim your sign up bonus and then walk away without spending a penny.

Online casinos and betting sites are notorious for offering lucrative sign-up bonuses, so you can start your hunt there.

If you plan to use this free money hack though, make sure you follow these tips:

Check the terms and conditions

Sometimes, sign up bonuses will come with hidden clauses and conditions that make it difficult for you to claim your money. For example, some online casinos will require you to gamble your bonus a certain number of times first.

Create a new email account

Most of the time, you’ll be required to input your email address to sign up and claim a bonus.

If you plan on doing this on many sites, make a new email address so that your personal email doesn’t end up flooded with spam.

Sign up for a credit card towards the end of the year

Credit card sign-up bonuses will usually require you to meet a minimum spending amount within a specific timeframe.

It’s easier to do this towards the end of the year as people tend to spend more in the holiday season on things like Christmas presents, Black Friday sales, and New Year celebrations.

8. Claim Your Unclaimed/Undelivered Tax Refund

Every single year, millions of dollars worth of tax refunds are left unclaimed or undelivered – and some of it could be yours.

Here are some reasons you might have missed out on your tax refund:

If you forgot to file a tax return or chose not to because your wages didn’t meet the minimum filing requirement, you can still do so within 3 years of the deadline.

And that’s not the only way to get hold of unclaimed money either, which brings us to our next hack…

9. Find Unclaimed Money

Over the course of your life, you may have earned money that you didn’t even know about and that has ended up lost in the void somewhere, waiting for you to claim it.

It could be an old bank account that you had as a child or one that a parent or guardian opened for you without you realizing. It could be a check from a previous employer for unpaid work or a utility deposit on an account that you no longer have open.

The good news is that there are a few online tools and websites that can help you to find that lost money, like unclaimed.org and MissingMoney.com. You can visit them and search their databases to find and claim free money that’s rightfully yours.

10. Monetize Your Downtime

If you’re like most people, you probably spend a lot of your downtime on your phone, so why not monetize that downtime to get free money?

There are actually a bunch of smartphone reward apps that will pay you to mess around on your smartphone.

You can download the rewards apps below and get paid for playing games, watching videos, browsing the net, reading emails, shopping online, and more.

Each time you complete a task, you earn rewards points that can be exchanged for PayPal money or free gift cards.

11. Turn Your Phone’s Lock Screen Into a Money-Making Machine

If playing games, watching videos, and browsing the net seems like too much hard work for you, this next free money hack might be a little more appealing to you.

It’s possible to hack your smartphone to turn your lock screen into a money-making machine by downloading screensaver rewards apps.

These apps will change your lock screen into an advertisement which you have to view in order to unlock your phone. Viewing these ads generates a small amount of money or rewards points every time you unlock your phone.

Again, we’re talking minuscule amounts of money here, but it is free.

12. Swap Your Damaged Money

Ever accidentally left a banknote in your jeans pocket and then washed them? Or maybe you left it too close to the fire and burnt it?

Well, you may have thought that the note was as good as useless. Yet it is possible to trade mutilated currency in through the Bureau of Engraving and Printing for a full redemption.

If you’ve kept hold of your damaged currency, this little-known free money hack can turn it legal tender again and provide a chunk of free money you never expected to be able to use.

It doesn’t matter whether the currency has been buried, damaged by explosives, chewed on by rats, or anything else. It can still be traded in, as long as:

• 50 percent or more of the note is present and clearly identifiable as US currency, sufficient remnants of relevant security features are visible, and at least one-half of the note is still intact.

Or

• 50 percent or less of the note is present and clearly identifiable as US currency and evidence is provided which demonstrates that the rest of the note has been completely destroyed.

1. They Aren’t Flashy

This habit is what separates a lot of wealthy people from some rich people.

Perhaps the ultimate example is Warren Buffett versus the kind of people you see on Rich Kids of Instagram.

Warren Buffett is the second wealthiest person in the world and probably the smartest investor in history.

He is currently worth more than $75 billion.

Buffett lives in the same house he bought in Omaha, Nebraska in 1958, as late as 2013, he still had a flip phone rather than a smartphone, and his favorite hobby is not the high stakes poker games some rich people enjoy but bridge.

Wealthy people tend to live below their means.

This is why you don’t hear of people like Warren Buffett declaring bankruptcy, but you often hear about professional athletes and musicians who have had to take that step.

Of course, when you have almost 80 billion dollars to your name there isn’t much you could do to lose all of it.

Those of us with considerably less can follow the example of wealthy people like Warren Buffett.

How to Do It?

Don’t upgrade your life every time you see an upgrade in your income.

Keep your housing costs at 30% or below of your income.

Stock your emergency fund with six months worth of expenses, fully fund your 401k and IRA accounts.

Once you’ve done those things, you can have a little bit of fun Rich Kids of Instagram style.

2. Early Birds Get the Worms

It can be hard to drag yourself out of a warm bed in the morning but doing so has a lot of benefits.

Try to go to bed earlier at night.

There are networking opportunities all around you.

In person, book yourself to go to an industry conference or fundraiser.

Mingle, meet new people, spark conversation and exchange business cards.

Head to Facebook groups, ask questions, answer questions, establish yourself as an expert and provide value to the conversation.

Don’t waste time and energy dithering over little things that don’t matter.

Thirty minutes of research will allow you to narrow down your choices to the best three.

From there you can investigate all three more fully, so you make the best decision.

6. They Have Patience

Wealthy people do not practice instant gratification in any area but especially not in areas concerning money.

That’s why you never hear of a wealthy person who became that way through some kind of get rich quick scheme.

They know building wealth takes time and anyone or anything promising to make you rich fast is a scam.

Investing is a long-term thing.

Even small sums of money invested and left untouched for enough time can become big sums of money.

Growing a business (or a side hustle) takes time.

If you abandon every investment or every project you start because they didn’t make you rich in six months, you are never going to achieve wealth.

Just slow down.

Take your time and above all, practice.

Even high-quality things won’t last forever unless you take care of them correctly.

That kind of little upkeep now and then whether it’s regular oil changes for your car or regularly polishing your shoes, makes the things you spend money on last even longer.

As I write this, the Dow Jones has just plunged 1,175 points, and $4 trillion has been lost over a period of eight days.

You can spend 20 minutes of your time answering questions and only make $2.

Consider you spend 4 hours Friday-Sunday taking surveys at around $5/hour.

There’s potential to make much more though.

2. Working in Panels

There are studies and panels which can fetch you $40 to $400 each.

You can mix those in with lower paying surveys to instantly lift your income.

Also think about strangers circulating throughout your home over a long period of time.

There’s a lot of cleaning and maintenance required for short-term rental properties.

You don’t have to do this cleaning and maintenance yourself of course, as most hosts usually hire an affordable cleaning company but consider the cost of this service.

This and other considerations should be reviewed thoroughly before you make the decision to rent out your entire space or just a room.

How Often to Rent Out Your Space

Next, consider how often you want to rent out your space.

You can make a healthy side income just renting out your space on the weekend.

Weekends are also a busy time for rentals, as people are traveling a lot on weekends.

You can also double or triple your income if you allow weekday rentals.

Think about all this and make your decision before you finalize your listing.

Expenses for Transitioning Your Space to Short-Term Rental

Then, there’s the expense of transitioning your space to a short-term rental unit and costs like:

• Furnishings
• Linens
• Cleaning and maintenance
• Small repairs, if applicable
• And, other costs

Consider your personal experience when you visit a hotel and try to recreate that same feeling for your guests.

Homeowners Insurance and other Implications

Lastly and most importantly, check with your homeowners insurance and homeowners association where you live, to make sure you are allowed to list your home as a short-term rental.

Some home insurance companies don’t allow it.

And, it can be frowned upon by HOA’s too.

Pay rate:

You can rent a room for $50/night and rent an entire home for $350/night (these are just examples).

This is dependent on many things like the size of the space, area, and other factors.

How much you can make total is also dependent on how often you rent out your space and if you’ll rent the entire home or a single room.

For example, weekend rentals at the $50/night for renting a room, could mean an extra $150/week if you rented Friday-Sunday.

That’s about $600/month in extra income, passively!

If you rented out your entire space for $350/night for weekends, that would equal out to $1,050 per weekend or $4,200 per month!

And, if you aren’t a homeowner, you can still do this and companies like AirBNB support it!

The process is almost the same as if you owned the home and it’s called AirBNB rental arbitrage.
You just want to make sure your landlord approves and you’re good to go!

10. Rent Your RV

Renting out your RV, like your travel trailer or Class A motorhome can make you money, rather than just sitting your RV in your driveway for most of the year.

You can go through a company called RVShare to make money passively renting out your RV.

Pay rate:

You can make an extra up to $22,000/year or more renting out your RV.

11. Rent Your Car

Partner with the company Turo to earn an extra income renting out your car.

This is perfect if you’re a homebody like me and stay in mostly, on the weekends.

Instead of your car sitting in your driveway unused, get paid by guests to rent it out!

Pay rate:

According to Turo, the average rate is around $706/month renting out your car.

That’s enough to pay your car note and then some!

12. Sell on Ebay

Ebay is an online marketplace where you can sell just about anything.

I use Ebay to sell odds and ends around the house around the holidays for an extra $300 to $500 and then I use that money to buy holiday gifts.

I recently started using Ebay again and after finding a hot product, made around $7,500 in the first week!

You get exposed to Ebay’s huge audience and it’s perfect for retail arbitrage, online arbitrage, or selling things around your house.

Pay rate:

There are part-time and full-time sellers on Ebay.

It’s not unusual to make $1,000 per month part-time working weekends only.

Best practices for Ebay:

• Find competitors doing very well and emulate their success
• Don’t be afraid to try the promoted listings

13. Sell on Amazon

Selling on Amazon is almost like selling on Ebay.

Amazon is much smaller than Ebay but outperforming them, as one of the largest marketplace leaders in the world.

That means if you sell on Amazon you will have a lot less competition.

Sell stuff around the house or try your hand at arbitrage to earn a weekend side hustle.

Pay rate:

Weekend sellers can expect to make up to $1,000/month or more.

When I tried Amazon selling many years ago, I started making $3,000/month almost instantly.

It’s not that difficult to sell on the platform and with the dozens of free and paid tools that exist today, to help with sourcing products, competition and more, you can possibly see the same success or even better!

Arbitrage is taking advantage of price differences in the market to make a profit.

When you do this online, it means you are sourcing products and then reselling them.

For example, you could source a desk for $40 at Walmart.com and resell on Ebay for $100, making a $60 profit.

Now, to put some further background to the example…

The desk you sell from Walmart.com is on sale at Walmart.

And, it’s selling on Ebay (the same price) with evidence of past sales (looking at Sold listings) in the $100-range.

This is what’s going on behind the scenes.

At any point in time you can find the same product in two different places at two different prices.

If the margin is large enough, buy from one place and sell on another, just like the Walmart/Ebay example.

Pay rate:

This depends on many things like the number of products you sell, the competitiveness of the product and other determining factors.

However, earning up to $1,200/month is definitely within reach.

Some new sellers can even go way beyond this.

Your success is going to be based on most notably, your competition.

More and more people are becoming players in the arbitrage game which can impede your success and income so be aware of this.

You’ll be sitting at your desk connected to your computer with headphones, listening to a conversation and typing the audio that you hear.

Your client will likely give you a style guide to follow which tells you how to write your transcription, when to ignore fumbled words, etc.

Pay rate:

Transcriptionists can make up to or over $25/hour working for places like Rev, other transcription companies and private clients.

21. Proofreading

This is just what it sounds like.

You will be paid to proofread documents to make sure they are free of grammar and spelling errors.

Proofreaders can work for proofreading companies like Scribe Media and others, or private clients.

Pay rate:

You can earn an hourly rate starting at $10/hour or higher depending on the job and your experience.

You can also earn a flat rate, based on the project, like $3,000.

22. Translation

If you’re bilingual or know many languages, consider translation services.

You will be translating a language into a new language, like translating Spanish into English.

Translation jobs can pay very well, considering a lot of people don’t know multiple languages.

Pay rate:

The average translator salary is around $20/hour.

23. Web Design

This is a technical job that requires a great eye for design and the ability to code.

Clients include professionals and businesses that are looking for web design, like e-commerce stores, attorneys, teachers, bloggers, podcasters, etc.

Pay rate:

Web designers typically earn by the hour or by the project.

The first custom site I paid for cost me around $2,500.

I’ve seen projects as high as $10,000 and some higher than that.

On an hourly basis, $50 to $100/hour or higher is not unusual.

Bloggers are creatives that get paid to create content.

How do bloggers make money?

Bloggers make money in various ways:

• Ads
• Sponsorships

Getting Paid Through Ads

Advertisers can places ads on blogs and pay bloggers according to the number of clicks ads receive.

So, if a blogger receives 500,000 monthly page views every month, they could potentially earn $8,000/month from ads alone, which is a result of the clicks that result from that traffic.

To earn money from from ads, bloggers should join ad networks like Google Adsense or Mediavine, to name a few.

Getting Paid From Sponsors

Sponsorships are arrangements where an advertiser pays a blogger a lump sum to advertise on their site, through a blog post, social media, email newsletter, etc.

A blogger receiving 400,000 monthly page views per month could fetch $5,000 per sponsorship.

For example, a travel blogger could partner with a VPN company that allows them to access the internet around the world.

The VPN company would pay the travel blogger to mention them on their blog, social media, etc.

That’s how sponsorships work.

Getting Paid From Your Own Products and Services

Then there are products and services that bloggers sell.

For example, a food blogger could offer a recipe ebook product or an accounting blogger could offer a tax audit/review service.

Bloggers create products and services themselves, then sell them to their readers.

This can be quite lucrative and product income makes up the bulk of income for many bloggers.

Getting Paid to Blog With Affiliate Marketing

Lastly, there’s affiliate marketing, where bloggers refer products to their audience and get paid a commission if a sale results.

Like if a fashion blogger refers her readers a handbag and her referral results in 10 sales.

She/he will earn 10 commissions (1 commission per sale) from affiliate marketing.

Pay rate:

Bloggers can make a lot or a little.

Income is based a lot on traffic, which can be driven by the age of the blog (older more seasoned blogs tend to have more traffic).

Not always though.

I have seen new bloggers start earning $4,000/month in the first six months.

A new blogger can expect to make up to $1,000/month within the first year.

Income starts at zero and gradually increases from there, depending on the frequency of publishing, promotion, how the blog is monetized and other factors.

Aged blogs 5 years and old can make up to $10,000 per month or more, again, based on so many factors.

But, keep in mind that having a blog for several years does not automatically warrant higher income.

It takes years of hard work, consistently publishing content, promotion, and more.

This is a fun job that’s very rewarding but if you are looking for income right away, this would not be a great fit for that as blogging income grows slowly over time, in most cases.

Delivery drivers track their deliveries through the Uber EATS app and they are paid per delivery based on pickups, delivery, and miles driven.

Drivers can also earn money through tips from customers. 

The job is pretty flexible. 

You control your schedule, working as much or as little as you want.

It’s really simple.
